Growing up, I played basketball for almost ten years, both on school teams and also independent leagues like National Junior Basketball and Amateur Athletic Union. I played every school season and during the off-seasons I was on city-wide teams going to tournaments all over my home state of California. Every coach, every game, and every team was truly special. Whether my teammates and I were getting back to conditioning (we called it “hell week”) in the hot summer sun before after a break, playing season games in the fall league started up, strength training in the winter, or touring during the spring and summer, I spent nearly every day on a basketball court for the greater part of a decade.
I remember my high school coach instilled in our squad the “5 D’s of Basketball.” They were: Drive, Discipline, Dedication, Desire, and Defense. I’ve taken those principles with me because they translate just as well into life as they do for sport.
When I left home and moved away to college in New York City, I stopped being active — until earlier this year. January 1st, 2019 to be exact. My friend asked me to join her for a Pilates and I haven’t looked back. Some months later, I started taking boxing classes, too. Now, I’m gearing up to run my first half marathon right here in Brooklyn. While the bulk of my training program is running, I also make time to cross-train with the workouts I love to keep things interesting with Pilates and boxing.
Returning to my athletic roots has meant more to me than I realized. Is it crazy to say I feel like I’m reconnecting with my inner child? The one who dirtied her hands at recess on the blacktop and would never let her hardwood shoes touch anything but the glossy basketball court. I feel like that part of me was missing from my daily routine and now that I’ve found it again, I don’t want to stop MOVING. I’m honored to spread the word about about Free People’s #MovingTogether contest.
